A Description of the Movie: A Good Life for Niklas
The 1st World Conference of the IASO - Tampere, Finland, 4-8 July, 2000
By Stefan & Inga-Lill Morell - Sweden.
"A Good Life for Niklas" was shown at the 1st World Conference in Tampere last summer. It´s a VHS copy lasting for 23 minutes, which shows the life of Niklas, a 25 year old AS adult.
In 1975 a little boy was born in Härnösand, a city in the north of Sweden. His parents were very proud and happy. This was their first child and he was given the name Niklas.
Niklas was a sweet and happy baby, but he didn´t want to sleep and he had eating difficulties. Soon his parents started to suspect that something wasn´t quite right. When Niklas reached his second year and still didn´t walk or talk a single word, they finally got an explanation.
Niklas was mentally handicapped. Four years after Niklas´ birth his little brother Rasmus was born. Rasmus was like Niklas in many ways, and it was soon clear that he had the same handicap as his brother. Twenty years later both were diagnosed as having "Angelman Syndrome". It was a great joy and relief to finally have an answer.
This film was recorded in the year 2000. Niklas has now started work and left home. Rasmus still has a year left at school and lives at home with his parents.
